Arts Centers

ART OUT WEST TRAIL
Arts Center
Waitakere
A group of 30 artists living and working in Waitakere, west of Auckland, have set up the Art Out West Trail, by which visitors can view and purchase art in artists' private studios. Many of the studios require advance notice, and you'll need a car if you want to really explore the trail. Brochures are available at the Auckland Travel and Information Centre.

Bars

CIVIC TAVERN
1 Wellesley St., Auckland, New Zealand
Phone: 09/373-3684
Bar, Piano Bar / Lounge
city center
At the heart of the city center, the Civic Tavern houses three bars. The London Bar has a vast selection of beer and an impressive variety of Scotch whiskey. The London Underground Bar is a sports bar with 8-ball pool tables and casino-style poker machines. For a glass of Irish stout, stay on the ground floor and visit Murphy's Irish Bar.

CLASSIC COMEDY & BAR
321 Queen St., Auckland, New Zealand
Phone: 09/373-4321
Bar, Piano Bar / Lounge
city center
Classic Comedy & Bar is housed in what used to be an X-rated movie theater, so if you get a funny look when you ask for directions, you'll know why. These days it is Auckland's only regular venue for live comedy. The caliber of the acts varies, and you'll find a mix of well-known Kiwi comedians, new faces, and the occasional international act.

LOADED HOG
104 Quay St., Auckland, New Zealand
Phone: 09/366-6491
Bar, Piano Bar / Lounge (Jazz)
city center
Part of the Viaduct Village development, the Loaded Hog has a vaguely nautical feel. This popular brewery and bistro has indoor and outdoor dining and drinking and can get crowded late in the week, so try to arrive early. Jazz musicians perform most evenings.

OCCIDENTAL BELGIAN BEER CAFE
6 Vulcan La., Auckland, New Zealand
Phone: 09/300-6226
Bar, Piano Bar / Lounge
city center
Vulcan Lane has long been an after-work favorite with the suit-and-tie set of downtown Auckland. The lane has been tidied up in recent years, and the Occidental Belgian Beer Cafe is one of the places that got a face-lift. Pair a pint of Belgian beer with a deep pot of mussels.

SHAKESPEARE TAVERN
Albert and Wyndham Sts., Auckland, New Zealand
Phone: 09/373-5396
Bar, Piano Bar / Lounge
city center
An atmospheric brewpub, the Shakespeare Tavern has beer with colorful names like Willpower Stout and Falstaff's Real Ale.
